About The Event
La notte è piccola per noi:
Nightlife, feminist movements and cultural urban policies in 1970’s Rome
Contemporary Rome has a vibrant nightlife scene and, according to literature in night-time economy and night studies, it was the first Western city to implement a night-time economy plan. Little attention is given to the role that feminist movements have played in the creation of a safer and accessible nightlife. This talk aims to retrace the origins of a night-time culture discourse and planning that originated in Rome in 1976-1985 and influenced much international scholarship, in connection to feminist movements that emerged during the same years in Rome.
Eleonora Diamanti is Lecturer in Media Studies at John Cabot University, Rome. She works on visual media and the night, urban space, and everyday digital practices in Eastern Cuba, Rome, Italy and Montréal, Canada. She takes a special interest in creative feminist writing and research-creation projects. She co-directed Guardians of the Night (2018 Cuba, 17’), a short experimental film on the night in Guantánamo, Cuba, and After the Earthquake (2017), a short film on material culture in central Italy. Her work has appeared in journals such as Feminist Media Studies, Visual Anthropology Review, Ethnologies, Intermédialités, Convergence.
