The first church ever dedicated to Mary, the Mother of God, Santa Maria Maggiore is one of the major papal basilicas of Rome. Unique in this church is the golden, ceiling, commissioned by the controversial Pope Alexander VI and built with the first of the gold Columbus brought back from America.
