The Roman colony of Cosa was founded in 273 BC after the victory of the Romans against the Etruscan cities of Volsinii and Vulci. The city of Orbetello rises in the middle of the homonymous lagoon dividing it into two bodies of water, also WWF oasis, ("Laguna di Levante" and "Laguna di Ponente").
