About The Event
From the outside it’s quite an unassuming building and the basilica itself is beautiful. The history here is incredible! You can see the different foundations built upon earlier foundations again and again, layer upon layer, like a “Roman lasagna”. The layers of excavations below starting with the 4th century church below, then down another level to the 1st century temple and Roman mint buildings, and the glimpse of the water system from a few centuries before that. A desperate attempt to outpace the flooding of the nearby Tiber River.
It’s a really unique site with a very interesting collection of excavations covering several centuries.
